Why do geese fly together in a V formation?

the v formation causes a slipstream for the birds behind the one in front causing it to be easier for them to fly long distances, the bird in front will often switch with a bird in back when it gets tired.

Answer:

There are two reasons that geese fly in a V shape. Firstly, it helps them to conserve energy, the first bird flies in front of the second bird to reduce the resistance of the wind.

In this way they can fly for a longer time before they can get tired and stop for rest. The second benefit of flying in this shape is that it is easy to keep a track on the birds of the group and assist better communication among themselves.
