Answer:

The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact had set a military agreement between the Soviets and Nazis. This allowed for both sides to attack Poland and annex its territory. Britain and France had promised Poland its independence, making sure if Germany were to attack it they would declare all-out war. So they did on September 3rd, two days after the German invasion of Poland, starting WW2.
