Given data:

The given expression is x^2 -6x-7=0.

The given expression can be written as,

\begin{gathered} x^2-6x=7 \\ x^2-6x+((6)/(2))^2=7+((6)/(2))^2 \\ x^2-2(x)(3)+3^2=7+3^2 \\ (x-3)^2=16 \end{gathered}

Thus, the number 9 is added on both sides to complete square.
