The quote above is an example of D. foreshadowing, to create suspense by providing hints about the future.
Although I did not read the story, it is obvious that the protagonist is going to do anything in order to 'become anything [he wishes]..." Even 'forfeit [his] soul."
So, the quote itself is giving us a glimpse of what is about to happen later on in the story.
