we can divide a square or a quadrilateral into two triangles. This gives us that the area of a triangle is half the area of the quadrilateral with the same base and height.

think of this as a sandwich. the sandwich is a quadrilateral. if you cut it in half diagonally, it becomes 2 triangles (I hoped this helped I'm not so great at analogies)
