Data:
Students: 25
boys: 12
girls: 25 - 12 = 13

Solving:
Does the ratio of girls to students represent a fraction?

(girls)/(students) \to\:\boxed{(13)/(25)}
Does the ratio of boys to girls represent a fraction?

(boys)/(girls) \to\:\boxed{(12)/(13)}

How do you know?By sharing the parts that result in a whole.
Example:
The proportion of boys by the total number of students plus the proportion of students by the total number of students will be the total number of students, We will have an integer:

(12)/(25) + (13)/(25) = (25)/(25) = 1\end{array}}\qquad\quad\checkmark

25 students...if 12 are boys, then (25 - 12) = 13 are girls

ratio of girls to students = 13/25 or 13:25 or 13 to 25
yes, it represents a fraction.....13/25 are girls

ratio of boys to girls = 12/13 or 12:13 or 12 to 13
yes, it represents a fraction....12/13...meaning there are 12 boys for every 13 girls
