Why did Louis XV1's decision to summon the estates-general prove disastrous

France was essentially bankrupt, and Louis was desperate for new ideas and taxes to get some money, so he summoned the Estates General.

Because the Third Estate realized that they had little-to-no power and that it was unfair that the nobles and clergy had entirely too much/more than they did.
