Louisa paid $12.25 for books at a yard sale she spent $2.50 on a hardcover book and the rest on 13 softcover books each of the softcover books cost the same. What was the cost of a single softcover book. Write and solve an equivalent equation

12.25 = 2.50 + 13x

x represents the price of the softcover books.

Subtract 2.50 from both sides to get:

9.75 = 13x
