It was a United States Supreme Court case. The Cherokee Nation sought a federal injunction against laws passed by the U.S. state of Georgia depriving them of rights within its boundaries, but the Supreme Court did not hear the case on its merits.

The Indian Removal act authorized the president to negotiate with southern Indian tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their ancestral homelands. The Removal Act was strongly supported in the South in order to gain access to lands inhabited by the Five Civilized Tribes.

Hope this helps!
