The correct answer is C. As a punishment; In Jane Eyre, the author explains that Jane's mother's brother had died in the red room. One time while she is trying to defend herself from her evil cousin she is sent to the red room as punishment as it embodies terror. Jane's custodian (her aunt) often mistreats her and this was simply one of those occasions.
