You said -5 + 2a = -a - 8
Add 'a' to each side: -5 + 3a = -8
Add 5 to each side: 3a = -3
Divide each side by 3 :
a = -1

The answer is a = -1
- 5 + 2a = -a - 8
+5 +5
2a = -a - 3
+a +a
3a = -3
/3 /3
a = -1
