Assuming you're talking about physical traits - Many of our traits usually do come from our genes, but either or - it's up to us.
For example: If your mom has freckles, you still have a chance of getting them whether recessive or dominant.

In some theories and systems, traits are something a person either has or does not have, but in many others traits are dimensions such as extroversion vs. introversion
, with each person rating somewhere along this spectrum.
