(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a)

Here [ a, b ] = [ - 1, 3 ] , then

f(b) = f(3) = 3² + 1 = 9 + 1 = 10

f(- 1) = (- 1)² + 1 = 1 + 1 = 2

average rate of change =
(10-2)/(3-(-1)) =
(8)/(3+1) =
(8)/(4) = 2
