Texas must be defended and liberty maintained. – Sam Houston, 1836

Sam Houston was commander-in-chief of the Texan army during the Texas Revolution against Mexico. Think about the reasons that Texans wanted to gain independence from Mexico. Considering why Texans and the Mexican government disagreed, why is that quote interesting and somewhat odd? Explain your answer.

texans wanted the freedom of religion and wanted to establish cotton plantations using slave labor. mexico forbid slavery and they were a catholic country whereas american settlers were protestant.
