the distance between any 2 points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) is

D= √((x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2)

given
(0,a) and (a,0)

D= √((a-0)^2+(0-a)^2)

D= √((a)^2+(-a)^2)

D= √(a^2+a^2)

D= √(2a^2)

D= a√(2)

the disance is a√2
