try to use a weight that will allow you to go through the full range of motion without straining or breaking form. your elbows should be "glued" to your ribcages as you lift/lower the weight. If you try to bring the bar to your chin, for example your shoulders will begin to move forward and your exercise becomes a bicep-shoulder curl which is just weird but is right.
