In Middle School math, it means to find out what number ' x ' must be in order for the equation to be a true statement. In middle school, it can only be one number.

Step-by-step explanation: Solving an equation means finding the value of the variable that makes the equation true.

Let's look at an example.

Solve the following equation.

3x + 1 = 7

To solve the equation, we need to get x by itself on one side and we do that by subtracting 1 from both sides to get 3x = 6. Now just divide both sides of the equation by 2 and we find that x = +2.

Thus, the solution to the equation is x = +2.

So the value of the variable is +2.
