William H. Seward negotiated for the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. He was a New York governor and a United States senator. He was an avid anti-slavery proponent and maintained a close professional and personal relationship with President Abraham Lincoln. He was appointed the nation's 24th Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869.
