Charles Sumner was an American politician and United States Senator from Massachusetts.
During his political career, he was known for his deep commitment to the cause of civil rights and emerged as an antislavery leader in the late 1840s. He was a very important person during the Reformation, the period of time after the American Civil War, in which rights for the fredmen were being established.
His death in 1874, due to a heart-attack, hindered the reconstruction efforts since he had been a promotor of equal rights since the begining of the era and was a key figure to the movement.
