"The Negro Speaks of Rivers" is a poem by African American author Langston Hughes. In this poem, the author tells us that something has happened to his soul. Throughout the poem, he repeats:

"My soul has grown deep like the rivers."

In the poem, the author talks about "his soul." However, this is not only a reference to his individual soul but an attempt to identify the soul of Black people, and to connect the struggles of Black people from every continent.
