-----------------------------------
Define x and y :
-----------------------------------
Let x be the points school x scored.
Let y be the points school y scored.

-----------------------------------
Construct equations :
-----------------------------------
School X has eight more points that school Y
x = y + 8

School X has three times as many points as school Y.
x = 3y

-----------------------------------
Solve for x and y :
-----------------------------------
x = y + 8 ------------------ (1)
x = 3y ------------------ (2)

Sub (2) into (1)

3y = y + 8
2y = 8
y = 4

-----------------------------------
Find school x and y :
-----------------------------------
School y has 4 points.
School x has 4x3= 12 points

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: School x has 12 points and school y has 4 points.

Why: 4 x 3 = 12
4 + 8 = 12
