The purpose of Medicare is to ensure that people ages 65 and over (and other specified individuals) have basic health insurance. It covers services such as inpatient hospital care, lab tests, and surgery. The purpose of Medicaid is to ensure that low-asset people (people with disabilities, older people, pregnant women, and children) have health coverage and/or nursing coverage (for those applicable).
