Explanation:

Let x be the number of carnations ordered.

Then, the number of roses = 3x

Also, He ordered a total of 56 flowers.

Then, according to the question, we have


3x+x=56\\\\\Rightarrow\ 4x=56\\\\\Rightarrow\ x=(56)/(7)=14

Now, the number of roses = 3(14)=42

Hence, Mr. Adams ordered 42 roses.
