Lactose is present
Lactose operon is a phenomenon whereby there is transport and metabolism of lactose in Escherichia coli and many other enteric bacteria. In most bacteria, glucose is the preferred carbon source in most bacteria. In lac operon, effective digestion of lactose is allowed in the absence of glucose through the activity of beta-galactosidase.
