When I added 1 + 3 I got 4/4 which is 1 whole do I add that to the whole number (2+3=6) ?

The answer is 6 because try adding the whole numbers first: 2+3=5 and then the fractions: 1\4 + 3/4= 1 (why? The denominator is already the same so you don’t have to worry about that. Just add the numerator and you get 4/4 which is equal to 1) now add 5+1= 6.
