Lee D. Baker's essay describes the real-life experience of a suffragist woman and her fight for gender equality, namely for justice. Real-life accounts are covered in narrative essays. The essay, from the beginning to end tells the story of this activist woman and it precisely identifies that this is a narrative-type essay.

There are four types of essays. One is narrative essay which is like telling or narrating a real-life experience to its readers. Second is descriptive essay which is similar to painting a picture through the use of words. The third one is expository essay which is a piece of writing that expresses the writer's opinions or thoughts regarding a particular subject and lastly, is persuasive essay which utilizes the art of persuasion in order for the writer to convey and convince his readers about his thoughts on a matter. Since Ida B. Wells- Barnett and Her Passion for Justice is a documentation of the life and experiences led by an African-American journalist, activist, suffragist and anti-lynching crusader during the post Reconstruction period then, it is a narrative essay. This literary work was written by Dr. Lee D. Baker.
