Gibbons v. Ogden was a lawsuit filed in 1819 over whether New York could grant a monopoly to a ferry operating on interstate waters. The court reaffirmed that the power over interstate commerce is in the hands of the congress according to Article 1 Sec 8. As a result of the court's decision, Thomas Gibbons was allowed to operate his steamboats in New York.
