Zhang Qian, often referred to as the pioneer of the Silk Road, was an imperial representative to the Han Dynasty. As a representative, his job was to bring reports of Chinese colonization back to the Emperor. Most goods traveled along the Silk Road from East to West. Silk was highly prized in Europe, improving personal hygiene, while spices were widely used in the production of medicines and preservation of food.
