Wars and Battles can get their names from where they were fought.
For example, the battle of Waterloo was fought near the village of Waterloo.

Almost all battles are amed for where they took place.
They are usually named after their geography or something related to it.
The battle of the Bulge was named after the German offensive at the bulge at the western front.
Operations on the other hand are named with code names that are named by generals and their staff. Operations can be named after people, such as Operation Barbarossa, after the German emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
