When we calculate the rise and run of two points, we are also calculating the slope. This phrase is commonly known as "rise over run". To find the rise, we simply look at one of the Y values. To find the run, we look at one of the x values. We have to determine how far up, and how far over we go from one point to the next. After graphing both of these points, we see that the rise is 3 and the run is1. This can be written as follows:

(Rise)/(Run)

=
(3)/(1)

To find the slope, we divide.

(3)/(1)

= 3

So, our rise over run is 3/1 and our slope is 3.
