How did the united states v. windsor ruling change the legal definition of marriage?

The legal definition of marriage was, after the case strictly a civil status. While states could still refuse to grant marriage licenses to same sex couples. Once any marriage was recognized by the state that marriage had full legal rights. Including around inheritance which, was the focus of this case.
