A sonic boom is when a jet breaks the sound barrel meaning it is going very fast, faster than sound. Sonic Booms create huge amounts of sound energy, when an object moves through air, it makes pressure waves in front of and behind it.

A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created by an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound. Sonic booms generate significant amounts of sound energy, sounding much like an explosion to the human ear. Hope this helps! :)
