The answer is 12 because 3/1 / 1/4=12.

Divide the whole (3 yards) by the size of the pieces (1/4 yard)

x= number of 1/4 yard pieces

x= 3 yards ÷ 1/4 yard pieces
Multiply by the 1/4 reciprocal (inverse)
x= 3 * 4/1
x= (3*4) / 1
x= 12/1 = 12

There are 12 one quarter sized pieces.
