Cody and Tyler were once the same height. Since then, Tyler's height has increased by 20%, while Cody has grown half as much. If Tyler is 4 feet tall now, how many inches tall is Cody now?

Answer:

Cody is 60 inches tall.

Explanation:

Let
h be the initial height of Cody and Tyler, then we know that now Cody's height
h_c is 20% more than
h, or

h_c=1.2h

and Tyler's height has increased half as much as the initial height; or

h_t=1.5h

Now Tyler is 4 feet tall; therefore ,

h=(h_t)/(1.2) =(4ft)/(1.2) =3.33 feet

is the initial height of Cody and Tyler.

Now Cody has grown as half as much as his initial height; therefore:

h_c=1.5h=1.5(3.33)=5feet

\boxed{h_c=5feet}

When converted to inches, this is 60 inches.

Therefore Cody is 60 inches tall.
