A box manufacturer needs to make a cardboard box without a lid. The box must have a base of 4 feet by 3 feet and a height of 2 feet. How much cardboard will be needed to make the box?

Answer:

40 ft2

Explanation:

S = Ph+2b

14(2)+2(12) = 52 ft2

But it is without lid so...

52-12=40

Therefore answer is 40ft2

The base requires (4 ft)*(3 ft) = 12 ft^2.
The sides require (2 ft)*(2*(4 ft +3 ft)) = 28 ft^2.
