I did some research, and something that is not a benefit is,
"You have an opportunity to tell the other person how you feel about what they have said."
You don't want to interrupt what they are saying or add to it. It is supposed to be for the person talking, not the listener. You could cause more people to be upset when you state the emotions that went with it. They may have different ones, it may steer you off topic, etc.
To be honest, I view this as a good thing. But, active listening is supposed to be you listening and actively paying attention.
