George Washington‘s foreign policy was primarily to keep the United States neutral in foreign affairs as much as possible, as he did not believe it was wise for the new nation to involve itself in the affairs of other nations. In this regard, he was not only successful, but set a precedent for U.S. foreign policy for many years to come.

George Washington called for extending foreign "commercial relations" which would be mutually beneficial and thus focused on little political connection. He was committed to neutrality with regard to foreign relations as he believes 'Foreign nations could not be trusted to do anything more than pursue their own interests when entering international treaties.'
