Answer: 9 pencils

SOLUTION

Given,

Holly had 30 pencils

If she gave 6 pencils to her friends,

Remaining pencils = 30 – 6

= 24 pencils

We are told that 3/8 of her pencils need to be sharpened

Since she has 24 pencils left,

The number of pencils that need to be sharpened = 3/8 of 24

= 3/8 x 24

= (3 x 24)/8

= 72/8

= 9 pencils

Therefore, the number of Holly’s pencils that need to be sharpened is 9.

This is the concept of algebra. Given that Holly has 30 pencils, the total number of pencils that Holly remained with after she gave her friends 6 pencils are:
Total=30-6=24 pencils
The fraction of pencils that need to be sharpened is 3/8
The number of pencils represented by this fraction will be:
(fraction of un-sharpened pencils)×(total number of remaining pencils)
3/8×24
=9 pencils
therefore we conclude that 9 pencils are not sharpened.
