Write the equation for the linear function that has the points (-2, 3) and (1, -6).

Remember the equation for linear function:

y = mx + b

First you need to find the slope (m) from the two points!

m = (-6-3)/(1- -2) = -3

Now let's use this shortcut to find the equation:

y - y1 = m (x - x1)

All you need to do is plug in any point (x1, y1) and the slope we found earlier! I'm going to use the point (1,-6):

y - (-6) = -3 (x - 1)

Rearrange that and you should get your answer in the form! :)

Answer:
y = -3x -3

Hello!

To solve for this, you must use your slope intercept formula to first find the slope. This is the formula:
y2-y1/x2-x1

Then, use your two points and plug the values of x and y into the formula:
-6-3/1-(-2)

This would simplify to -9/3 or -3. This would be your slope.

Then, set up your linear equation format:
y=mx+b

Plug in your slope and one of the given points in order to solve for your other needed value of b or your y-intercept:
3=-3(-2)+b
3=6+b
b=-3

Now that you have your slope of -3 and your y-intercept of -3, you can now conclude that your equation would be:
y=-3x-3
