from looking at the graph

n<q

Subtract q from each side

n-q < q-q

n-q < 0

This is less than 0

Now subtract n from each side

n<q

n-n < q-n

0 < q-n

This is greater than 0

Lets compare n-q and q

n = -4

q = -1

n-q = -4 --1 = -4 +1 = -3

-3 < -1

n-q < q

Lets look at q-n

-1 --4

-1 +4 = 3

q is closer to 0 than q-n


The greatest value is q-n

The smallest value is n-q

q is closest to 0
