Find the GCF of the terms of the polynomial 18x^4-27x^3-36x^2

Explanation:

Each of the coefficients can be divided by nine. You can factor each of them to show what the results would be.

  • 18:2 * 3 * 3
  • 27:3 * 3 * 3
  • 36:3 * 3 * 2 * 2

The bolded part is what is common to each of them.

The highest common factor in all three that's a variable is x^2. You cannot take any more than that out of the three terms.

So the answer would be

9x^2

The HCF that can be taken out of the polynomial and the left over of the polynomial is

9x^2 ( 2x^2 - 3x - 4) This is not your answer but it helps you see what the answer means.
