let the weight of the orange be x, then

pineapple weighs 7x, and also x + 870

equating the 2 expressions for the weight of the pineapple

7x = x + 870 ( subtract x from both sides )

6x = 870 ( divide both sides by 6 )

x = 145

The orange weighs 145 grams and the pineapple 145 + 870 = 1015 grams

Total weight of both = 145 + 1015 = 1060 grams
