How did Lincoln’s and the unions attitude toward African Americans change as the civil war progressed

They slowly began to view them as people instead of slaves. Seeing as African Americans fought, bled, and dies alongside their brothers in arms for the Unions cause, they began to earn respect. However, it took many, many more years to finally change the attitudes of people and allow for equality. There is still more to be done in relations between black and white as racism is still apparent and present.
