On the one hand, the Hamiltonian Federalists wanted the creation of a strong central government, with a power greater than the power of the states. Furthermore, they believed that owners with a large academic background should rule the country.

On the other hand, the Jefersonian Republicans believed that the existence of a central government would be beneficial, but that most of this power should stay with the states. Furthermore, they believed that the common man should rule the nation.
