a. 17

b. 10.4

Explanation:

If the median is 10 and the range is 12, it means that the number x cannot be smaller than 5 or 10. If it were the median would be 5. if the range is 12 and x is greater 10, it means that the number x is greater than 15 as the range is greater than the difference between 15 and 5.

As such

x - 5 = 12

add 5 to both sides

x = 12 + 5

x = 17

The mean is the total of the data set divided by the number that makes the data set. Let the mean be t

t = (10 + 5 + 15 + 5 + 17)/5

= 52/5

= 10.4
