using the gradient formula for slope m

m = (y₂ - y₁ ) / (x₂ - x₁ )

with (x₁, y₁ ) = (6, - 1 ) and (x₂, y₂ ) = (w, 7 )

m =
(7+1)/(w-6) =
(8)/(w-6) = - 8 ( cross- multiply )

- 8(w - 6) = 8

- 8w + 48 = 8 ( subtract 48 from both sides )

- 8w = - 40 ( divide both sides by - 8 )

w = 5
