x = 4

y = 2





EXPLANATION.

For the top triangle, the third angle

= 180 - 148 - 18 = 14 \degree

Since the two triangles are congruent, the corresponding angles are equal.


This implies that,

3x + y = 14 - - - (1)

and

5x - y = 18 - - - (2)

If we add the two equations, we obtain,


8x = 32

We divide both sides by 8 to get,


x = 4


We put this value in to equation 1 to get,



3(4) + y = 14


This implies that,


12 + y = 14



y = 14 - 12 = 2
