x - 4 = -8

+4 both sides

x - 4 + 4 = -8 + 4

-4 + 4 cancel each other out

x = -8 + 4

x = -4

The answer is x = -4.

You are solving for x. Isolate the x. Note the equal sign, what you do to one side, you do to the other.

Add 4 to both sides

x - 4 (+4) = -8 (+4)

x = -8 + 4

Simplify. Combine like terms

x = (-8 + 4)

x = -4

-4 is your answer for x.
