In an election the winner receives 40 less then twice as many votes as the other. If the winner received 308 votes, how many votes did the loser get?

Greetings!

If the winner has 308 votes, if you add on 40 votes so it makes the total votes to be twice the amount of the other, this is 348. Then you can divide by two to get the amount of votes.

348 / 2 = 174 votes.

Hope this helps!

In an election the winner receives 40 less then twice as many votes as the other

Let x be the votes received by the loser

Winner receives 40 less than twice of loser

winner receives 40 less than 2x

so winner receives = 2x - 40

the winner received 308 votes

so 308 = 2x - 40

solve for x

Add 40 on both sides

348 = 2x

Divide both sides by 2

x= 174

loser received 174 votes
