If we look at the speeds, each of them are “miles per hour”, and if we are given the amount of time (number of hours) that they travelled, we can easily get the distance that they travelled.
For example, if I travelled at 5 miles per hour for an hour, I would have travelled 5 miles in total.
Now, for our example:
54 miles per hour for 3.5 hours — If ONE hour gets them 54 miles from their starting point, we have to see how far they would get if they did that 3.5 times.
54*3.5=189
We can do the same for the other one:
56*3=168
And then to get the total distance, we just add those two:
168+189=357 miles
