On its first delivery trip, a truck traveled at an average rate of 54 miles per hour for 3.5 hours. On the second delivery, it traveled at an average rate of 56 miles per hour for 3 hours. What is the total distance the truck traveled for the two deliveries? 715 miles 179 miles 330 miles 357 miles

If we look at the speeds, each of them are “miles per hour”, and if we are given the amount of time (number of hours) that they travelled, we can easily get the distance that they travelled.

For example, if I travelled at 5 miles per hour for an hour, I would have travelled 5 miles in total.

Now, for our example:
54 miles per hour for 3.5 hours — If ONE hour gets them 54 miles from their starting point, we have to see how far they would get if they did that 3.5 times.

54*3.5=189

We can do the same for the other one:

56*3=168

And then to get the total distance, we just add those two:

168+189=357 miles
